Oh Oscar

Oscar Wilde makes me happy. Reading his collective works, I feel as though I have stepped into the inner workings of an intricate machine that despite it's cogs, wheels and rivets, claims to be entirely simple.

The Importance of Being Earnest never ceases to entertain me, it is sheer brilliance. I love the idea of women who carry their own diaries in order to have something sensational to read. I love the idea that two grown men can fight over sandwiches and muffins. And I love the name Earnest.

For our final WAAPA design project we have each chosen an icon to base both a set and costume design around. I chose Mr Smarty-pants Wilde. There are so many angles that I could take, as I research and delve more into his story, I keep finding new ideas. Although, given so many of his 'opinions' or 'observations' were based on women, and the odd marriage he tangled himself up in, I am creating a costume for his wife Constance and Oscar will be represented in the space. Wilde got his wife to wear all sorts of things that went against the norm of the Victorian era. The Aesthete's weren't really keen on corsets, and she often attended functions dressed in medieval or Greek gowns. It has been such an interesting project, I will post up pictures once they are ready. But for now I will leave you with this...
