The Turtleneck For The Office

 photo UniqloWork1_zps82b56c6b.jpg

Uniqlo merino turtle neck sweater, Moschino skirt, Windsor Smith Gillie heels, Michael Kors watch

As we descend into the Winter months, I wanted to make sure I had a couple of thin jumpers to wear under my blazers or jackets. When Uniqlo opened its Melbourne doors and online store I checked out their wares discovering the prices to be really reasonable and the quality very impressive. With an extensive range of cashmere, alpaca and merino wool sweaters all under $100 each, in all sorts of colours, I settled on two grey roll neck jumpers. The Japanese brand, known mostly to Australians in the past through their travels, Uniqlo have made headlines for bringing their (normcore) basics to our shores.

Branding their clothing as 'life wear' Uniqlo create clothing for everyday, for everyone.
Knowing this I have styled the sweater in two ways- one entirely casual, the other a typical office wear look. Lately when I have been at home I have had the TV show 'Revenge' running in the background. Namely because the DVD player broke, so my Ally McBeal DVDs are out, and the other series' on Jess' hard drive mostly involve crime or some other sort of zombie/ blood/ hospital related things- all of which I can not handle. (I am seriously no good with blood!) Anyway, between Ally McBeal and Revenge, I think I have unknowingly channeled this into my work look here. The cream pencil skirt, big (although messy) hair, turtle neck and heels... My casual take will follow soon.

As you may know, I tend to ruthlessly attack and purge my wardrobe of pieces on a regular basis. Despite that I only weeks ago sold another 20 something items on eBay and gave a bag full of pieces away, I have still managed to find a few more things to sell, so at the last minute I have decided to jump on board with this weekends Perth Blogger Garage Sale. As bloggers tend to snap up new season pieces, are tuned into sales, offered exclusive discounts or are given items to wear, the stack of clothes and accessories pile up quickly.

This weekend is your opportunity to make the most of this by shopping our wardrobes, at a discounted rate. With over 15 bloggers including Bonnie Friday, Ethereal Reality, Where The Styled Things Are, Modern Girls in Vintage Pearls, Little Miss Mon Bon, Harlequins Party, The Style Trust, What’s the Goh, The Boyfriend Shirt, Vintage Chic, Lady Maple Vintage, The Illusive Femme, Adorn You, Sass and Spice, and myself all opening up stalls.

For myself I have pieces from Acne Studios, Lack of Color, Sass & Bide, Elizabeth & James, Alice McCall, ASOS, Flannel, Ray-Ban, Josh Goot, First Base, Sonia Rykell, Lucette, and more with nothing over $100.00. Pictured are just a few of these.

How To Wear Denim Shorts With Heels (and not look skanky)
One of my favourite Fashion houses by far, would be Balmain. Year after year the collections tear down the runway with stunning models completely blowing me away with utterly cool rock and roll style. I can never get enough, the images torn out of magazines featuring the looks have stayed with me long after the trend has been copied (usually poorly), are always influencing my style. French, glamorous and edgy, but usually adaptable off runway, with military references, embellishments and texture, there is a lot to covet. In the Spring Summer collections of 2010, Balmain sent tiny denim shorts down the runway, and we have seen them ever since. I am definitely guilty of having ridiculed denim shorts- and even vowed not to wear them. I big time 'knocked it before I tried it'. Then I started working long hours installing design work over the 30-40+ degree heat in summer, painting, lifting and carrying things, bending down etc. Skirts didn't get the job done, pants were too hot and cotton shorts were generally not sturdy enough to hold the vast number of items I would shove into my pockets. Realizing how useful and in fact comfortable they could be, my attitude toward the denim short shifted. Each time I pull them on I admit I still think of the 'never nude' shower scenes from tv show Arrested Development, and can not help but think of the gazillion teenagers out there wearing them (body shape flattering or not- cause they gotta be in with the crowd). It still feels a little too casual at certain times, and I have certainly ordered a pair online only to find the rear coverage is a fraction less than I would like (WARNING: examine them carefully before adding to cart!), but I honestly do like wearing them. I am going to spell that out one more time, I honestly DO like wearing them.

The Guidelines
Of course, there are some rules which I stick to and can recommend as guidelines if you should choose to try out this tricky wardrobe staple ( if it is regularly over 38+ degrees, they are a staple).

- Make sure that they suit your shape, and buy a size or two up from your 'normal' fit. They look better with some room in the thigh area, and you can wear a nice leather belt to bring them in should you need to at the waist. If they don't suit your shape- something else does, find out what that is and stick to it!
- Cover up your behind and keep your modesty, no matter your age, keep it out of sight. It only takes a few added centimeters to the hemline to avoid this faux pas
- Stick to a light or dark blue vintage wash, or a simple black, grey or white denim short.
- On the Balmain runway, the short denim shorts were not seen without a tee and leather motorbike jacket. The thing to take away from this is, if you show off all of that leg, do not show off all of your arms/ chest/ midriff as well. You pick one, and stick to it.
- Still too hot to wear a long sleeved jacket, knit or cardigan? Opt for a loose long sleeved tee or shirt.
- Pair with a plain white, grey, black, khaki or beige top, t-shirt, cardigan, knit, jacket or blazer
- I don't see much point in buying into something overly embellished as for me, I grow sick of that really fast.
- I am not so keen on the pocket linings sticking out past the hem line, it asks for ridicule (and seems like a classic case of design wank to me).
- As this look can be easily cheapened, go with quality, simple accessories. Add a light scarf or wide brimmed hat for a point of difference. Avoid cheap costume jewelry.
- Keep makeup simple, clean, natural and minimal (in these photos I'd forgotten mascara, and look extra sleepy, oops!)
- Keep your legs neat, moisturized and natural- no orange streaky fake tans (or, don't fake tan at all, it works for me)

Footwear
- You can wear them with a heel (I chose to emphasize this by even styling them for this shoot with a LEOPARD heel. Surely short shorts and leopard are equal to skank, right? Sometimes, yes. It is a very fine line. These leopard faux pony pumps are the right hue, have the right sized print and aren't platform, so it works. Right now there are a lot of this faux pony leopard on offer, in various shoe forms. Below I will add some suggestions that I have been eyeing off).
- Stick to a simple heel shape, aka a pointed pump or strappy heel in a neutral colour (or a bright red or cobalt for some splash of colour) or a boot.
- Stay away from anything too busy, platformed or 'cheap' looking. Leave the gimmicks alone.

Building A Capsule Wardrobe: Skirts

 photo tumblr_mvdfn0dSiK1qkx3nqo1_1280_zpsf48cd5a3.jpg

You may look at my series of Building A Capsule Wardobe and think that the list in each category is quite long. You are correct in thinking that you could make do with less, indeed you can. I have been listing what I think to be the minimum basics to give you everything, but in each category you could pick a few items to get you started, and build from there. I haven't listed a bunch of links or suggestions of specific items to buy, because I have tried to choose items that you can find anywhere or at anytime. For example, I have a pleated skirt in an oxblood red by Lover which you have seen on the blog a couple of times, but I also have a grey vintage pleated skirt that I was given by my Nana. The point is, that these items are meant to be mostly classics, things that you will keep wearing until they fall apart.
Some handy rules I have when it comes to skirts… it is all about getting the proportions right for your own shape.
I always wear a heel with any skirt that falls below the knee, otherwise I look frumpy and small, like the skirt is wearing me, not the other way around. I am really not able to pair a ballet flat and pencil skirt together and pull it off. Tread with caution if you are planning to do this, I have seen very few women who actually can. Pencil skirts are so flattering, I love the silhouette, as they follow the curve of the female form. I have added a lot to this list, because they are so damn good, and can be dressed up or down, either with a t-shirt and casual jacket like a leather or denim jacket, a knit jumper (the front tucked in) or dressed up with a blouse and blazer. I love to mix up wearing skirts to work, casually or to a dressy event, it feels very feminine, or rock and roll depending on what you choose. Dresses may be easier to throw on and run out the door, but a good skirt is so elegant and fun.

This is my list of 'Must Have Skirts For Any Woman':
- 1x Midi length pleated skirt in grey, black, cream, oxblood, navy or tan (wear with a t-shirt or blouse and pair with a heel- the length works best with a little height)
- 1x Light grey pencil skirt, (team with t-shirt, blouse or cami and blazer and pumps)
- 1x Cream or White split pencil skirt (team with a black tee, leather jacket, shoulder bag and peeptoe ankle boots and seriously nail it man!)
- 1x Lace skirt in a knee length or longer (team with a cami, blouse or t-shirt and strappy heels)
- 1x Pastel coloured pencil skirt (this neoprene one is a fave, I love neoprene!)
- 1x Grey A-line skirt in a mini length (perfect for work, transeasonal)
- 1x White or Cream mini skirt (pictured here is a flippy skirt, just for fun, I like the fluting.)
- 1x Black leather mini or pencil skirt (choose the right thing for you, and dare to wear it anytime!)

If you have missed any of the 'Building A Capsule Wardrobe' series, check out the previous posts here.
I will be bringing you more of this sort of post in coming weeks, so stay tuned. What skirts do you rely on?

Building A Capsule Wardrobe: Pants and Shorts

 photo tumblr_mvdir5E6cW1qkx3nqo1_1280_zps2402408b.jpg

Let's get it straight, pants, are the greatest freedom. Pioneering for women to wear pants was one of the greatest things women like Gabrielle Chanel ever did. Now, I love dresses, skirts and feeling feminine, but I like to do this with a touch of manliness. The juxtaposition between male/ female is the perfect spot to reside in for me. Comfort, is a major factor for me when it comes to getting dressed, women who kill themselves to fit into something uncomfortable for days on end make me frustrated. A lot of primping and product application can be fun, but everyday it is just tiring. I am not a fan of lots of hairspray, product, etc. I do love to dress up and feel beautiful, but I do not like to sacrifice my sanity and comfort to achieve this. In the world of fashion, I often feel perplexed watching what I dub as 'overdressed' women. Posing in platform neon heels, a bikini and bangles for photos is confusing. Wearing heels on grass, is confusing. If you are going to an event like the races, or a picnic, please do not wear heels! I feel at odds with myself the second I step on to unsturdy ground in a heel- even if this is for a moment. I find flatform shoes confusing, they are just so unattractive! The list goes on, but at the end of the day, to each their own.

I wear jeans, a lot. For a while, when I had gone through a super girly phase, jeans really bothered me. I hated seeing them on everybody- all looking the same. The thing is though, it is comfortable, often warmer, and you CAN personalize your style even if you are simply 'in jeans'. These days they are also widely worn in dressier circumstances, with a good pump heel, or ankle boot they can elongate the legs and look amazing. Find a good brand and stick to it. For me I love Rag and Bone, J-Brand (they are worth the $$ because the fit it is incredible), Sass and Bide, Dr.Denim and One Teaspoon.
I do prefer to wear trousers or jeans as an everyday thing- rather than when going out for dinner, to a show or the like. For occasional wear I will switch back to a skirt or dress. Don't underestimate how valuable a well tailored black trouser can be, they will come in handy, are great for the office or official business and work in summer or winter. I ensure I have a matching black blazer, just in case I want to suit up.

For years I thought shorts were for men in summer, for Mickey Mouse and for children. I didn't see that they had much of a place in a womens wardrobe. It took me a while to see how I could feel like they were appropriate and found a place in my own day-to-day. Now I wear them all summer, and consider them to be a staple- again, in my day-to day, I leave shorter shorts out of the office and prefer not to wear them out to an event or dinner. They certainly can be worn in dressier ways- when tailored correctly, I feel they can look rather nice. The trick is to get the proportions right. A short short with an exposing cami top feels to me like I am showing too much skin. A cami top and longer shorts, is a little better, but best suited to culottes. Shorter shorts I feel team up best with a shirt or tee which has full or 3/4 length sleeves. When it comes to buying denim shorts I tend to go up one or two sizes, so they are looser around the thigh area. It is more flattering that way, and gives you plenty of room to move. I don't mind the torn hems, as long as the overall short covers your butt (ensure you bend down when you try them on- just to check you actually can without exposing cheek!) and I tend to stay away from embellishment, at least when building the essential capsule wardrobe.

Here is the breakdown of my 'Must Have Pants and Shorts For Any Woman':
- 1x Dark Denim jeans (skinny, fitted or flared- to suit your own body shape best)
- 1x Blue, Khaki, Bone, White or Oxblood coloured jean (again to suit your own body shape)
- 1x Torn 'Boyfriend' jean (I love the One Teaspoon Awesome Baggies, buy in a size or two larger)
- 1x Black linen long shorts- around knee length, slightly wide in the leg
- 1x Black tailored dress trousers for occasional wear and office wear
- 1x Black jeans (again, in a cut to suit your body shape)
- 1x Light Grey suit-shorts, can be short or longer, wear with an elegant flat or kitten heel for a dressier look
- 1x light washed denim or black denim cut off shorts (long enough to house your butt and worn tastefully!)
- 1x White leather shorts (or black- you would wear both, but start with one)
- 1x Black Leather Shorts (I wear mine too much!)
- 1x Culottes (not pictured) midi length, wear with cropped tops or blouses

Danny Roberts

 photo Danny-Roberts-Print-Flatlay_zps4115217b.jpg

I can not tell you how excited I am to own a print from my favourite illustrator Danny Roberts. I ordered some as presents for Christmas, and made sure to get a couple of my faves for me. I had to. This print, which I watched Danny work on via instagram in 2012, I loved. Danny recently undertook what it seemed like a year long revamp of his website, resulting in a supremely inspiring site, check it out here.

Some other things I sneakily picked up during the post-Christmas sales include this pretty Lack of Color fedora- not a colour I wear often, but it makes for a nice change.
I brought one perfume to Perth with me, but when I saw this one, I decided to add another to the collection. Annick Goutal are a beautiful perfumier, which years ago my friend Genevieve and I visited in Paris. I remember the store being very bright, beautiful and French. We sniffed at the most incredible and different scents, and I knew one day I would love to find one which suited me. Enter the David Jones sale where I got this fragrance for over half price. Score! This scent, Nuit Etoilee, combines citrus and peppermint with Siberian pine and fir balsam which all comes together to smell like a refreshing, snowy European night. Told you they were different. :) Also the bottles are so pretty!
Did anyone else pick up a few little treats during the sales? What did you get?

Lingerie

 photo Bras-n-Things-Lace_zps33eeaa20.jpg

After weeks of complaining that my back was always sore, my partner pointed out that I was clearly wearing the wrong bra size. This information kind of blew my mind. It turns out that the red marks which lasted for hours after taking them off were not meant to be there! When I stopped to think about it, my last proper fitting was a good ten years ago. Had it really been that long?! Admittedly, yes, I have generally only shopped at department stores for lingerie and most of the time the shop assistants were too busy to help me. I must admit to thinking, 'I have nothing there, I should leave them to help the bigger ladies.' Places like Myer have a fittings guide stuck up in the change rooms, and I pretty much went off of that. I guess this was not 100% accurate.

So, I set aside a few hours and went looking for some new support. The women at Myer, Perth were not very helpful. When I had gone into the change rooms I said to the sales woman that I had not had a fitting in ten years and may need help. This was met with a half smile and the number-of-items card being shoved in my direction. I ended up finding a ton of sizes and styles to try on, and then worked out which were obviously better or worse. I narrowed it down to one size and shape that felt right for me, which was a lot bigger than I had been wearing, pressed the 'help' button and within seconds the conversations about dining, health issues and other things being bandied about ceased and a woman came to help. She was quick and unfriendly, I felt I had interrupted something important. When I asked if this bra was the right size she quickly turned me from side to side, ran her eyes over the back and front and declared, "Yes, that is fine." Closed the door, and left.
This was my 3 second bra fitting.
 photo Calvin-Klein-Black-Bra_zps95aa5d50.jpg
Once I knew what size I was after I went back out to find more to try in the right size, and eventually decided which were for me and which were not. I didn't ask for more help and ended up with one lace Calvin Klein Black Label padded bra, and two Lovable wire-free t-shirt bras.

Next I thought I would try a store recommended to me by friends, Bras-n-Things. Seconds after I walked into the store a young, happy salesgirl came up and said hello, and asked if I need help finding a size. Unfortunately they had no wire-free bras, (some had removable wires, but all were also padded) but she was very helpful. I found an unpadded lace bra, tried it on and happy with the fit, was in and out in minutes. The sales people were helpful, but the range wasn't so great. I don't really need a lot of padding or wire to hold me in/ up, so their target audience wasn't so much for me. The prices were quite low, but I am not sure if all styles are of the best quality.
 photo Simone-Perele-Bralet_zps3fbe37e7.jpg
Finally I hit up Simone Perele, a french brand with beautiful lace lingerie. I loved this stretch lace bralet, which also came in red or cream. The sales staff were really warm, friendly and helpful. In future I will start here (the Harbour Town store) and go from there. The store was beautiful, the change rooms felt far more elegant than I would expect of Harbour Town, and the quality of the lingerie very impressive. Through the Simone Perele website I also discovered The Lingerie Mag, a beautiful blog by Parisian resident Audrey Murga. Unfortunately my only knowledge of the French language comes from my too brief time in the country and obsession with French cinema. Sadly this is not enough for me to read Audrey's words, but the images are beautiful.
The Simone Perele website has bra fitting tips, which I will add below. Find more on their website here.

Steps for a perfect bra fitting…

1. Fasten the bra in the middle hook. If it is too tight move up to a larger (under bust) size and smaller cup.

2. Position the midriff band so that the front and back are the same height, ensuring the separator is in the centre of each breast.

3. Use the shoulder adjustment rings to find the right length. Straps too tight will crush the bust, and too loose are unflattering to the neckline.

4. Finally, adjust your bust in the bra by leaning forward slightly. Underwires should go around the breasts. Use your hand to position the nipple under the cross cup seam, at the top of the dart or in the centre of the cup, depending on the style.

Have you found any good lingerie stores or brands that you would recommend?

Menswear

 photo Jetty-1_zps1bd000cb.jpg

 photo Jetty-6_zpse3640a4a.jpg

Shopping for men, is really tricky. Wait, shopping for flamboyant men, is easy, shopping for men who happily subscribe to 'whatever' trend is in vogue, is easy. Shopping for men who have a classic taste, and personality that they are keen to share through their clothing, is tricky. At least, it is, it seems, in Australia.
I can list ten + Australian womenswear designers that I love, covet and purchase pieces from, of both a classic, and occasional variety. How many menswear labels can I suggest for my male friends? A handful, and even at that, they do tend to cringe at the prices.

So, when building a new wardrobe (for men or women) it comes down to the staples, at least initially.
Comfort, quality, value, fit and design.
The comfort part lends itself not only to fabric, cuts, size and shape but to confidence. A good fit, is more than just a size issue. A shy person who wears a bold yellow and red print is not going to feel very comfortable. A shy person in a white tee and classic denim jean, no probs. Stick to something that works, and doesn't draw attention in a negative or confusing way. Leave the bold prints (and clashing ones at that) to someone with a natural flamboyance.
Does classic equate to boring? It doesn't have to.
The quality aspect is something that I have found, jacks up the prices. I do not see the point in buying items that are not made to last. Men wear clothes for a long time (generally speaking). Finding good fabrics- natural, breathable fibres, is one of the first things to look for. If it feels 'weird' he won't wear it. Waxed jeans, anything velvet, poly-blends, things with huge decals- forget it. If it increases sweat- forget it. Come with a list, stick to it as best you can, and find ways to mix and match. One pair of jeans to three shirts; one thin jumper, one thicker; one anorak (with a rain protective hood is a bonus) and one coat- not several coats; two pairs of shorts, not five. Seven pairs of sneakers- is not vital, three yes, seven or more, no. (At least initially the fun stuff can grow later!)
Value is where you have to shop around, which yes, takes a bit longer, but, that fairly well fitted pair of jeans for $120, compared to the same branded ones in another store for $100 or even a sale pair from another brand (which turn out to fit better) for $50, is worth that extra 45 mins. That extra $50 buys a shirt (appreciate the 20% off sale).
It may take longer, you may be in 'the shops' for longer, but as long as you avoid weekends, late night shopping nights and grab a coffee as you go, tends to be worth it. If you have been there for longer than two hours with no fruit to your labour however, it's time to get out.
The fit- you can have things altered, each body is different, don't be afraid to try a 34 instead of your 32, (particularly when the 'trend' for shorts run narrow in the leg) just make sure you are comfortable.
Finally the design- printed tees which don't 'speak' to you on a personal level- e.g. that just have some random scribbling or logo- are not worth buying. Really into the Mexican Day of the Dead? Sure, grab that manly floral skull tee. Not really into it? Don't. Leave it for someone who is. Obviously I use a t-shirt as an example, translate that across to all other items.

So what does this have to do with the photos pictured? Nada, except that on this particular day, after a morning of shopping for menswear for my partner, we shot these photos (and also I look a bit boyish!). I did mention I prefer a more casual look when I am just hanging out. This fits the bill.
If you have any menswear label or shopping tips, please share them in the comments below! I am keen to hear where people shop for men.

Claire Inc. Kenzo and Ellery

One of my favorite online stores is Claire Inc. They specialize in the most incredible vintage finds ever! Seriously, I am not kidding, each piece is fantastic, they describe their store as having 'One-off GEMS, Inaccessible Designer Vintage', which is so true. This amazing emerald Kenzo knit jumper was one of my first purchases from their site, and has been like a best friend keeping me warm this winter. I love it!
I have a nice little collection of Moschino, Kenzo, and DVF thanks to them. The Moschino pieces are so fun, quirky and interesting, people will ask me about them weeks later, and describe them perfectly. It is not often that clothes leave such a vivid impression in someone's mind. I also love that they are based in Adelaide. YEY!
Pictured above I am also wearing the Ellery jeans I can not take off, Yeojin Bae suede wedges and Mimco purse.

If you are looking for unbelievable vintage Chanel, Karl Lagerfeld, Missoni, Sonia Rykiel, Valentino, Versace, Jean Paul Gaultier, Chloe and much more go to their website now! Everything comes beautifully wrapped in their signature printed paper, and feels like opening the sort of presents you can only dream about upon arrival! Below are some pieces I am in love with that they have in store now... le sigh. (All below pics care of claireinc.com).
